Khor Virap monastery, Armenia
Khor Virap, an apostolic monastery built 642 by Nerses III the Builder and new Surb Astvatsatsin chapel or Church of the Holy Mother of God built 1662, at Pokr Vedi near Artashat on the Ararat Plain in Armenia. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a dungeon on this site, his release in 301 AD resulting in Armenia becoming a christian country. Picture by Manuel Cohen
