City of Lens, viewed from the top of a slag heap, 1 of 2 enormous spoil heaps from pits 11 and 19 of a coal mine, opened 1891 by the Compagnie des Mines de Lens, at Loos-en-Gohelle near Lens, Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France. One of the mounds can be climbed on foot for views of the surrounding area, it is partly vegetated and its warmth creates a microclimate for biodiversity.
