Maeshowe chambered cairn, Stenness, Mainland, Orkney
Path to the tomb entrance at Maeshowe, a Neolithic chambered cairn containing a monumental tomb, on a platform, surrounded by a ditch and bank, built c. 2800 BC, near Stenness on Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. The chamber tomb is reached via a 10m long passage lined with huge sandstone slabs. Around the winter solstice, sunlight reaches the chamber wall. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
