Memorial de la Retirada, a monument erected to commemorate Spanish Republicans exiled to France in 1939, at the former customs post Col des Balitres, near Cerbere, on the 13km Chemin Walter Benjamin, opened 2007, a footpath following the route taken by the German philosopher on 24th September 1940, from Banyuls to Portbou in Spain, while fleeing Nazism, Cerbere, Pyrenees-Orientales, Occitanie, France. Benjamin was led by Resistance member Lisa Fittko to Portbou on the Spanish border, where he committed suicide for fear of being apprehended by Nazis. Picture by Manuel Cohen
