Menelaion, a shrine or sanctuary dedicated to Menelaus, king of Mycenaea, built early 8th century BC, on the Profitis Ilias hill near Sparta, an Ancient Greek city-state founded c. 650 BC in Laconia, Greece. In the distance is Mt Taygetos. Sparta was a powerful military city-state throughout the Greek ancient and classical periods, and was later inhabited by the Romans and Byzantines.
