Mevlid-i Halil mosque, Urfa, Turkey
Courtyard, dome and minarets of the Mevlid-i Halil mosque complex, Ottoman, built 1523 AD, at night, in Eyyubiye, Sanliurfa, or Urfa, the site of ancient Edessa, Turkey. The mosque was built next to the cave where Abraham (prophet Ibrahim) is thought to have been born, and is dedicated to his birth. The site originally housed a Roman temple, then a synagogue, then a Byzantine church, before becoming a mosque. Picture by Manuel Cohen
