Mezuzah, Museum of Jewish History, Girona, Catalonia, Spain
Mezuzah, a small metal case housing a parchment with prayer verses from the Torah, attached to doorframes in a house, offering protection to the inhabitants, in the Museum of Jewish History, opened 2000 in the Bonastruc ca Porta Centre, in the Call Jueu or Jewish Quarter, in the old town of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The Jewish community in Girona grew from the 9th century and flourished from the 12th century, when the city housed an important Kabbalistic school, until their expulsion in 1492 under the Catholic Monarchs.
