Mihrab of the Green Mosque, Bursa, Turkey

Mihrab of the Green Mosque or Yesil Cami, Bursa, Turkey. The 15m high mihrab has a moulded tile frame and its niche is crowned by twelve rows of mocarabe, with a six-ribbed shell on top. The intricate pattern of the tiles, full of flowers and entwining stems, was achieved through the cuerda seca technique, followed by ingenious gilding patterns. The Green Mosque was built under Sultan Mehmed Celebi in 1419-21 by the architect Haci Ivaz Pasha. The painted decorations were by Ali bin Ilyas and Mehmed el Mecnun.
