First bath of Achilles, floor mosaic, 5th century AD, detail, in Room 40, the main hall and reception room, in the House of Theseus, residence of the Roman governor, built late 2nd century AD, at Paphos Archaeological Park, or Kato Pafos Archaeological Park, Paphos, Cyprus. This fragment depicts the newborn Achilles held by his mother Thetis and also sitting with his nurse Anatrophe beside a water basin. On the left is a personification of Ambrosia with a water jug on the right, king Peleus on a throne with 3 fates Clotho with spindle and distaff, Lachesis with diptych and Atropos with open parchment. New Pafos was founded 4th century BC by king Nicocles and was the ancient capital of Cyprus from 2nd century BC. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
