Excavation of the South Mound in 1942, with 135, 000 wheelbarrows of earth removed and subsequently replaced, photograph, in the museum at Jelling Royal Necropolis, a Viking royal burial site at Jelling, Vejle, Jutland, Denmark. A stone ship setting was found beneath the mound, with evidence of a timber structure above, built around a central oak pole. The site consists of 2 10th century Viking burial mounds, 2 runestones erected by Harald Bluetooth and king Gorm, a medieval church built over the Viking church and an enormous ship setting.
