Mystras, ruined fortified town, capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea, 14th - 15th century, on Mount Taygetus near ancient Sparta, in Peloponnese, Laconia, Greece. On top of the hill is the Palace of the Despots, residence of the kephale or governor and of the despots, built 13th - 15th century. The Byzantine town full of churches decorated with frescoes was also settled by the Ottomans but was abandoned in the 1830s and is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
