Nilometer, Abu, Elephantine island, Egypt
Nilometer with sacred basin, 2 staircases, tunnel leading to river and scale for measuring floods, originally built 26th dynasty, c. 672-525 BC, and rebuilt in Ptolemaic and Roman times, at the Khnum Temple, at Abu, on Elephantine island in the river Nile, at Aswan, Egypt. The island was important in the ivory trade from c. 3, 000 BC during the 1st dynasty, and was a defensive site above the First Cataract of the Nile at the border between Egypt and Nubia.
