Longhouse in the Norse settlement, c. 9th century, on the Brough of Birsay, a small uninhabited tidal island off Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. The Norse village was built over a Pictish settlement and consists of houses, longhouses, saunas and a 12th century Romanesque church.
