Old Cathedral, Coimbra, Portugal

Se Velha or Old Cathedral, a 12th century Romanesque church built by Master Robert of France in Coimbra, Portugal. The cathedral was commissioned by King Afonso Henriques after the Battle of Ourique in 1139. The Western facade has a crenellated roofline and an arched portal with Arabic and Pre-romanesque influences, and a similar window above. In the background is the University of Coimbra clock tower. The University of Coimbra was first founded in 1290 and moved to Coimbra in 1308 and to the royal palace in 1537. The historic buildings of Coimbra are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
