Ottoman tower house, Gjirokastra, Albania
Traditional Ottoman tower house in Gjirokastra, Southern Albania, in the historical region of Epirus, with most Ottoman houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Typical houses consist of a tall stone block structure up to 5 storeys, with external and internal staircases surrounding the house. Gjirokastra was settled by the Greek Chaonians, the Romans and Byzantines before becoming an Ottoman city in 1417. Its old town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
