The painting was commissioned by the Camaldolese Order for abbot Ambrogio Traversar, for the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. The original convent was rebuilt 1437-52 for Cosimo I de Medici by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo Michelozzi, 1396-1472, in Renaissance style. It is part of the Florence UNESCO World Heritage Site.
