Painting, International Slavery Museum, Liverpool, England
Am Not I A Man And A Brother, abolitionist painting, c. 1800, by unknown artist, in the International Slavery Museum, at Merseyside Maritime Museum, Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The painting may have been used by the antislavery movement, although some see it as submissive, supporting the idea of freedom as a generous gift rather than a human right. Ship owners and merchants from Liverpool profited greatly from the slave trade, taking over 1.5 million Africans to America. Picture by Manuel Cohen
