Viking arrives in Chicago after having crossed the Atlantic, captained by Magnus Andersen, in 1893, painting, by Hjalmar Johnssen, 1852-1901, in the Norwegian Maritime Museum, or Norse Maritimt Museum, Oslo, Norway. Viking was a replica of the Gokstad ship and arrived at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. The Gokstad Ship is a clinker built oak Viking ship built 9th century, excavated 1880 from a burial mound at Gokstad farm, Sadefjord, Vestfold, Norway. Picture by Manuel Cohen
