Lion sculpture on the portal of the Cathedral of St Domnius and behind, entrance to imperial apartments in the peristyle or monumental central courtyard, in Diocletian's Palace, built late 3rd century AD as palace, fortress and military garrison for Roman emperor Diocletian, in Split, Croatia. Split was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century BC, was the seat of Roman emperor Diocletian from 305 AD and was later ruled by Byzantines, Venetians and Dalmatians.
