Petroglyphs, Yuboa River, Dominican Republic, Caribbean
Petroglyphs on rocks along the Yuboa river, at a site used for ceremonies and rituals by the precolumbian Taino people, near Bonao in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. The carvings represent eyes in the form of masks, were created by the chiefdom of Maguana, and are 1500-500 years old. The rock art here, which is painted, drawn and carved, is thought to be related to birth, rain and fertility, and to the worship of the goddess Atabey, Mother of Waters in the Taino culture.
