Excavation of the Oseberg Ship or Osebergskipet, a karve type clinker built ship in oak, built c. 820, excavated in 1904 from a burial mound in the Slagen valley near Tonsberg, photograph, at Midgard Viking Centre, opened 2000, Borre, Vestfold, Norway. The original ship is exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. It was buried in the grave, c. 834, of 2 wealthy women, 1 of whom is thought to be queen Alvhild, along with luxurious furniture, tools, a cart and decorative textiles. Picture by Manuel Cohen
