Excavation of the Gokstad burial mound, or King's mound, at Gokstad farm, Sadefjord, Vestfold, Norway, photograph, 1880, in the Norwegian Maritime Museum, or Norse Maritimt Museum, Oslo, Norway. Farmers had discovered a grave containing a Viking ship, 3 smaller boats, many grave objects, animal skeletons and the remains of a man. Excavations revealed the grave, 895-903, of a Viking chieftain, Olaf Geirstad-Alf, inside the Gokstad Ship, a clinker built oak Viking ship, which is exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo.
