Porch of the Caryatids, Erechtheion, Acropolis

Porch of the Caryatids, detail, of the Erechtheion, a classical Greek temple built 421-406 BC, dedicated to Athena and Poseidon, on the North side of the Acropolis of Athens, an ancient citadel site raised above the city, in Athens, Greece. The porch consists of 6 female statues acting as supports for the roof. The Erechtheion is thought to have been designed by architect Mnesicles and sculpted and decorated by Phidias. Pericles developed the acropolis in the 5th century BC, adding the Parthenon, Propylaia, Erechtheion and Temple of Athena Nike to the site. The acropolis is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
