Incense burner known as tlemaitl or incense ladle, polychrome ceramic, Toltec, 950-1100 AD, from the State of Mexico, in the Museo de Arte Prehispanico de Mexico Rufino Tamayo, a museum of pre-columbian art founded 1974, in Oaxaca, Mexico. Tlemaitl were used in rituals called tlenamaquiliztli where hot coals were collected in the bowl of the ladle and incense made from tree resin was added to produce scented smoke, in homage to the gods.
