Prytaneum, Ephesus, Izmir, Turkey

The Prytaneum, 3rd century BC, Ephesus, Izmir, Turkey. This was where religious ceremonies, official receptions and banquets were held. The sacred flame symbolizing the heart of Ephesus was kept constantly alight in the Prytaneum. It was entered via a courtyard surrounded by columns and was also the office of the city's leading government dignitary. Its main room was used for public banquets for honoured individuals. To the west a richly decorated banquet hall or residential house seems to have been functionally related to the Prytaneum. Ephesus was an ancient Greek city founded in the 10th century BC, and later a major Roman city, on the Ionian coast near present day Selcuk. Picture by Manuel Cohen
