Public toilets, Ephesus, Izmir, Turkey
The latrine or public toilets, 1st century AD, Ephesus, Izmir, Turkey. The toilets were part of the Scholastica Baths but were also open to the paying public. They are off the covered Academy Street and are arranged around 3 sides of an open colonnaded courtyard. Fresh water was available for washing in the channel and a pool, while a drainage system underneath dealt with sewage. Ephesus was an ancient Greek city founded in the 10th century BC, and later a major Roman city, on the Ionian coast near present day Selcuk. Picture by Manuel Cohen
