Outer rampart beside the Tour du Treseau, a royal tower built late 13th century, and behind, the Porte Narbonnaise, main gateway built c. 1280, in the Citadel of Carcassonne, a fortress built in the Roman then medieval period and restored by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc 1853-79, Aude, Occitanie, France. To the left is the Porte Narbonnaise, a gateway built c. 1280. The fortified city has 2 outer walls defended by 52 towers and barbicans, and a drawbridge across a moat leads to the castle keep.
