St John the Evangelist, Roman high relief from a funerary monument by unknown sculptor, reworked 15th century and inscribed with the saint's name, found in the boundary wall of the Church of St Jerome on Marjan Hill in Split, detail, in the Archaeological Museum, founded 1820, in Split, Croatia. The figure, originally a woman, is dressed in a tunic and cloak, holding a feather or scroll, standing in a niche. The hair was adjusted and halo added later. Split was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century BC, was the seat of Roman emperor Diocletian from 305 AD and was later ruled by Byzantines, Venetians and Dalmatians. The historic centre of Split is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
