Neptune riding the Hippocampus, limestone relief, Roman, early 3rd century AD, from Salona, now Solin, in the Archaeological Museum, founded 1820, in Split, Croatia. Split was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century BC, was the seat of Roman emperor Diocletian from 305 AD and was later ruled by Byzantines, Venetians and Dalmatians.
