Stone relief sculpture of St Gregory the Illuminator in a pit with a viper, on the facade of the Surb Astvatsatsin chapel or Church of the Holy Mother of God, built 1662, within the original apostolic monastery built 642 by Nerses III the Builder, at Khor Virap, at Pokr Vedi near Artashat on the Ararat Plain in Armenia. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a dungeon under the chapel, his release in 301 AD resulting in Armenia becoming a christian country. Picture by Manuel Cohen
