Relief, Gateway from Ajuala, Abu, Elephantine island, Egypt
Relief, possibly commissioned by Roman emperor Augustus, on the gateway from Ajuala, originally at Paptoulis in Lower Nubia, brought here c. 1900 and reconstructed in 1988, at Abu, on Elephantine island in the river Nile, at Aswan, Egypt. The island was important in the ivory trade from c. 3, 000 BC during the 1st dynasty, and was a defensive site above the First Cataract of the Nile at the border between Egypt and Nubia.
