Ring wall, 65m long, at Ribe Viking Centre, a reconstructed Viking village and living history site, at Ribe, Syddanmark, Jutland, Denmark. Although there is no evidence of a ring fortress at Ribe, from the late 10th century a semicircular moat was dug to protect the settlement, with a large rampart on the inside, now partially reconstructed. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark, founded c. 700 AD, was a Viking trade centre and had strong christian connections through archbishop Ansgar from 9th century. Picture by Manuel Cohen
