River Nile, Aswan, Egypt
River Nile and desert beyond, seen from the terrace of the Winston Churchill suite, at the Old Cataract Hotel, a colonial era hotel built 1899 by Thomas Cook, in Aswan, Egypt. Winston Churchill, British prime minister, first stayed at the hotel for the inauguration of the Aswan Low Dam in 1902. The hotel housed European travellers visiting Aswan throughout the 20th century. It was restored 2008-11 and reopened in 2011. Picture by Manuel Cohen
