Rocca Brancaleone fortress, Ravenna, Italy
Rocca Brancaleone fortress, built 1457-70 by the Venetians as part of the fortified city walls on the northeast side of Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. In the centre is the Chapel Tower, an entrance with bas-reliefs of the lion of St Mark and the Virgin and child. The fortress originally encompassed many defensive towers and a citadel for housing troops. The original Rocca area is now a grassy park. Picture by Manuel Cohen
