Roman Auditorium, Kom El Deka, Alexandria, Egypt
Auditorium, one of 22 built 5th - 7th centuries AD, part of a university complex with lecture halls filled with benches, at Kom El Deka, or Kom el-Dikka, an archaeological site in Alexandria, Egypt, formerly a Roman residential area with late imperial villas, baths, a theatre and auditoria. The auditoria follow a monumental colonnaded portico and are mainly rectangular, although some have a semicircular exedra. They contain rows of stone benches, tiered seating for 20-30 students, and an elevated seat for the lecturer. Picture by Manuel Cohen
