Round Temple, Knidos, Mugla, Turkey
Round Temple terrace, or Temple of Aphrodite Euploia, Greek, built 4th century BC, at Knidos, Mugla, Caria, Turkey. The temple was thought to house the Aphrodite of Knidos statue, and she was worshipped here as a sea goddess, patron of sailors. Behind is the Boulakrates Fountain and small military harbour or northern harbour. Knidos was an ancient Dorian Greek Hellenistic city which was also settled by the Persians, Romans and was Byzantine from 5th century. Picture by Manuel Cohen
