Royal burial mounds, Gamla Uppsala, Uppland, Sweden

Mellanhogen mound and behind, Osthogen mound, royal burial mounds of chiefs or Kungshogarna, 6th century, at Gamla Uppsala, near Uppsala, Sweden. Gamla Uppsala was the historical residence of Swedish kings and an important religious and political centre from the 3rd century AD through the Middle Ages. It has been a burial site for 2, 000 years, originally housing up to 3, 000 burial mounds. The royal mounds are thought to be of the kings of Svear who feature in Icelandic sagas and Germanic legends. On the left is the Gamla Uppsala Church, built 12th century on the site of an ancient pagan temple, partially rebuilt after a fire in the 18th century. Picture by Manuel Cohen
