Royal burial mounds, Gamla Uppsala, Uppland, Sweden
Osthogen mound behind the trees, a royal burial mound containing the bodies of a prince and a woman, c. 550-600, at Gamla Uppsala, near Uppsala, Sweden. Gamla Uppsala was the historical residence of Swedish kings and an important religious and political centre from the 3rd century AD through the Middle Ages. It has been a burial site for 2, 000 years, originally housing up to 3, 000 burial mounds. The royal mounds are thought to be of the kings of Svear who feature in Icelandic sagas and Germanic legends. Picture by Manuel Cohen
