Rumkale fortress, Gaziantep, Turkey
Rumkale, a Byzantine fortress protecting the empire's border, then seat of a Syriac orthodox bishopric from 5th century, then under Armenian rule from 11th century, then used as a Mamluk and an Ottoman fort, on the river Euphrates, Gaziantep, Turkey. The fort is near Halfeti, a village partially flooded after the Birecik Dam was built in 1999, and can be visited from there by boat. Picture by Manuel Cohen
