Runes, Tomb, Maeshowe chambered cairn, Stenness, Mainland

Runic inscriptions of 2 different types, made by Norsemen in the 12th century ('The man who is most skilled in runes west of the ocean carved these runes with the axe which Gauk Trandilsson owned in the south of Iceland'), on the south east wall of the main chamber of the tomb at Maeshowe, a Neolithic chambered cairn containing a monumental tomb, built c. 2800 BC, near Stenness on Mainland, Orkney, Scotland.
