Salamanca

The Baroque style Clerecia Church, originally the Royal College of the Company of Jesus, was commissioned in the 17th century, from architect Juan Gomez de Mora, by Queen Margarita of Austria, wife of Philip III of Spain. It comprises two sections: the Jesuit school and church, with its three-storey Baroque cloister, and private living quarters for the monks and now houses the Salamanca Pontificia University. Salamanca, an important Spanish University city, is known as La Ciudad Dorada (The golden city) because of the unique golden colour of its Renaissance sandstone buildings. Founded in 1218 its University is still one of the most important in Spain. Around it the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
