Salamander, Salle du Conseil, Chateau Royal de

Salamander breathing fire with crown, symbol of Francois I, on the fireplace in the Salle du Conseil or Council Room, the site of the assassination of the Duc de Guise in 1588, on the second floor of the Francois I wing, built early 16th century in Italian Renaissance style, at the Chateau Royal de Blois, built 13th - 17th century in Blois in the Loire Valley, Loir-et-Cher, Centre, France. The murder is retold in several 19th century paintings hung in the room. The chateau has 564 rooms and 75 staircases and is listed as a historic monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
