Sarcophagus, Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, Ravenna
Marble sarcophagus, 5th century, with relief of 2 lambs representing apostles and palm trees, flanking a cross within a laurel wreath, representing Christ triumphant, and Chi Rho crosses on the lid, in the side aisle of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, a Byzantine church consecrated 549 AD by bishop Maximian, dedicated to St Apollinaris, in Classe, Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The marble plaque has a Latin inscription describing the 40 days penitence of Otto III Holy Roman Emperor in 1000 AD in the basilica, led by the monk St Romuald, after a barefoot pilgrimage from Rome to Mt Gargano.
