Sarcophagus, Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, Ravenna
Small child's sarcophagus with Latin inscription naming the young girl Licinia Valeria Faustina Italica, who died aged 1 year 6 months 6 days, late Roman, in the side aisle of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, a Byzantine church consecrated 549 AD by bishop Maximian, dedicated to St Apollinaris, in Classe, Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The marble plaque has a Latin inscription honouring the archbishops of Ravenna, 1721, donated by Camaldolese monks. The building is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
