Sauna, Brough of Birsay, Mainland, Orkney, Scotland
Steam room or sauna, with pebbles which were heated and wetted to produce steam, with stone benches and turf insulation, probably belonging to a large house, in the Norse settlement, c. 9th century, on the Brough of Birsay, a small uninhabited tidal island off Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. The Norse village was built over a Pictish settlement and consists of houses, longhouses, saunas and a 12th century Romanesque church. The island was inhabited from 6th century by early christians, then Picts, then the Norse. Picture by Manuel Cohen
