Statue of Harpocrates, with curly hair and with his right hand on his mouth, Roman, 2nd century AD, marble, from El Mehamara, Sidi Bishr, in the Antiquities Museum, established 2001, in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Library of Alexandria, built 1995-2002 in Alexandria, Egypt. Harpocrates as a god was worshipped in Ptolemaic Alexandria and depicted in this gesture of the hieroglyph child, but later became the Hellenistic god of silence and secrets.
