The damned burning alive in cauldrons in the throat of Satan, with Judas spilling his entrails and others hanging, in Purgatory, detail from the monumental polychrome Gothic altarpiece, late 14th century, in the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Bethleem, in the Cathedrale Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur de Narbonne, or Narbonne cathedral, begun 1272 in Gothic style, and remaining unfinished, Narbonne, Aude, Occitania, France. The altarpiece contains scenes from the life of Christ, saints and prophets, and in the lower register, scenes from hell, purgatory and limbo. The cathedral is listed as a historic monument.
