Sphinx with female human head and winged lion's body, detail, Hittite, New Kingdom period, 13th century BC, restored and returned to Turkey from Germany after 94 years in 2011, 1 of 4 sphinxes excavated in 1907 at the Sphinx Gate, Yerkapi, Hattusa, in Corum Bogazkoy Museum, housing finds from Hattusa archaeological site, in Bogazkale, Corum, Anatolia, Turkey. Hattusa was the capital of the Hittite empire, built in the late Bronze Age from c. 1650 BC, on an older Chalcolithic settlement founded 6th millennium BC.
