Pieta, sculpture, 16th century, poplar and linden wood, in the Eglise Saint-Barthelemy, rebuilt 1817-19, in Lupiac, Gers, Occitania, France. This sculpture is thought to have been commissioned by the Batz-Castelmore family, as Arnaud de Bats, 1604-1704, brother of D'Artagnan, was the priest in Lupiac. D'Artagnan, from The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, was based on a real person, Charles de Batz-Castelmore, comte d'Artagnan, 1611-73, from this town. Picture by Manuel Cohen
