Lady Carcas, an 8th century Saracen queen who defended the citadel against Charlemagne and gave Carcassonne its name, stone sculpture in 5 pieces, 16th century (face restored), in the Musee Lapidaire at the Citadel of Carcassonne, a fortress built in the Roman then medieval period and restored by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc 1853-79, Aude, Occitanie, France. A replica statue is placed at the Porte Narbonnaise. The citadel is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
